The story
From Lagos to Canada
My career began in Lagos, Nigeria, one of the most competitive, fastest-moving job markets in the world. If you've ever worked in Lagos, you know: nobody hands you anything. You learn to be excellent, you learn to be visible, and you learn quickly that talent alone has never been enough.
When I moved to Canada, I brought years of experience, real expertise, and a track record I was proud of. And I still had to start over. New market. New rules. New networks. A resume that suddenly didn't translate. It's the quiet, exhausting experience so many newcomers and career changers know: being brilliant on paper and invisible in the room.
So I did what I now teach. I studied the new market like a strategist, not a job seeker. I rebuilt my positioning, earned the credentials that carry weight here (CPHR, PMP®, SHRM-CP, PHRi™, SFC™), and worked my way back into the rooms where hiring and promotion decisions get made.
Since then, I've spent over a decade in HR and people leadership across finance, tech, consulting, healthcare, and the non-profit and public sectors, in Nigeria and in Canada. I've been the recruiter reading your resume in under thirty seconds. I've been the talent partner in Canadian tech deciding who gets the interview. I've been the HR leader in the room where promotions are argued, defended, and lost.
Here's what all of that taught me: careers are not won on merit alone. They're won on clarity, positioning, visibility, and strategy.
